Test for Burnout

This test was developed by Ayala Pines and Elliot Aronson and can indicate

the degree of burnout you are experiencing. 

As you consider each item, select the number that best corresponds to how you feel and place it next to each statement.

1 = Never    2 = Once in a great while   3 = Rarely   4 = Sometimes    5 = Often   6 = Usually   7 = Always

To determine your score:

 

                            1. Add the values that you placed before each of these numbered statements:

                                      1, 2, 4, 5, 7, 8, 9, 10, 11, 12, 13, 14, 15, 16, 17, 18, 21  ______

                            2. Now add the values that you placed before each of these numbered statements above:

                                       3, 6, 19, 20  _______

                             3.  Add the totals from lines 1 and 2 and subtract 32 _____

                             4.  Add the totals from lines 1 and 3 _____

                             5.   Divide the answer by 21.  The result is your burnout score ______

If your score is between 2 and 3, you are doing well.

If your score is between 3 and 4, you might wish to examine your job and home life, evalute your priorities and consider what changes if any you can make to prevent burnout.

If your score is 4 or higher, you are experiencing burnout.  Creating a plan of action to restore balance to your life is strongly suggested.
